Renewable energy explored this Autumn

This term the school, for whom i’m the outdoor learning teacher, have been exploring exploring electricity in a range of ways indoors. I took on renewables in the outdoors, to look at how nature and natural materials can help us generate cleaner and ‘greener’ energy. Here are some examples of the children’s exploration of water, wind and solar/heat. P1 started with finding the wind…

We used bubbles to see which way the wind blew. We made our own bubble makers from paper, wire or socks!
— P1

P2/3 Made some wind instruments & wind toys - a cardboard bullroarers, a whistle from a pencil and large boomerangs - we were so speedy it was hard to get a photo in focus!

P3/4 Tried a bit of solar power- a mini desalinisation plant /salt water purifying, solar oven & solar water pump…. but it was a cloudy day.. We then resorted to wind energy with a few aeroplanes, parachutes and boomerangs

P4/5 Explored water as a means of energy generation making water wheel ‘generators’ . Later in the term, we investigated Mr Beaufort’s scale- generating our own wind energy or creating things that use wind to propel themselves .

P5/6 made solar prints (on and actual sunny day) with acrylic paint and solar power

P6/7 made their own wooden functioning wind turbines ~(with axels) & explored a new tool the chisel…
